S. Sylvia Downing

S. Sylvia Downing
Sylvia was born on Nov. 6, 1928 at Whitinsville Hospital, daughter of Lester (Hank) Hewett and
Stella M. Hewett (Chute).
She spent her life in Whitinsville married to Kenneth B. Downing for over 60 years until his death
in 2011.
Sylvia was an active member of the Whitinsville United Methodist Church, the Whitinsville
Women’s Club and the Serro Scotty travel trailer owners association.
Sylvia was an avid knitter and baker, using those talents to help support fundraising efforts for
charitable organizations including the church.
As a mother she became involved in her son’s activities as a Cub Scout Leader and a Church
Youth Activities Leader.
In support of family goals she joined her husband and son in studying for and receiving their
amatuer radio operator liscenses.
In their later years she and her husband became avid Celtics and Patriots fans. Cheering them
on from the couch.
She is survived by her son Curtis B. Downing and his wife Cathy and their two children.
