Richard William Antonelli, 60, a longtime resident of Pocasset MA, passed away quietly after a five year bout with lung cancer and connected illnesses on Sunday, July 7, 2013 at Boston Medical Center. He was a much loved, gentle son of the late Francis William Antonelli of New London CT and Yvonne Wheeler, presently of Manchester NH.
He was born in the New London Naval Base hospital on May 2, 1953, while his father was at-sea on the submarine USS Proteus.
Richard followed his father's footsteps by joining the U.S. Navy on August 30, 1971 in New London CT. He attained the rank of YN3 and earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Medal of Good Conduct. After his service, he worked in Groton CT for Electric Boat Co. as a welder.
He married his first wife, Marlene Jane Petanovitch of Newington CT and fathered their only child, Tammy Lynn, who married John Tirillo of West Granby CT.
A daughter, Shawna Frances, was born to Richard and Mary Shea of Pocasset MA, now a junior at the local high school.
Richard worked as a framer of post and beam houses for Eastern Post & Beam Corp. and more recently, as a maintenance supervisor for Cuoto Management / Dunkin' Donuts throughout the Cape Cod area.
“Tony”, as he was known to his friends, was a self-taught photographer, among his many versatile talents, including playing the guitar, working on computers, and hosting friends and relatives with his famous “Egg Rolls a la Tony”. Richard was studying for his degree in Computer Science with the University of Phoenix. His goal, when he got well, was to start a business fixing computers in and about the Cape Cod area.
Those that he left behind are his mother Yvonne Wheeler of Manchester NH; two daughters, Tammy Lynn Antonelli Sears Tirillo with husband John Tirillo and grandchildren Eberly, Autumn and Ludovico Tirillo of W. Granby CT, and Shawna Frances Antonelli of Pocasset MA, two sisters, Linda Sue Antonelli Greenwald with husband William Anderson Greenwald and Wendy Antonelli, all of Milford NH; and his seven nieces and nephews and one grandniece: William J. Hunter, Jr. of Killingworth CT, Kristin Hunter Dobransky and daughter Jacqueline Dobransky of Plantsville CT, Jared Greenwald of Waco TX, Spencer Westover of Springville UT, Chelsea Greenwald of Milford NH, Aubrey Antonelli of Fitchburg NH, and Molly Greenwald of Provo UT.
The funeral will be held on July 16, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, located at 1220 County Road, Cataumet MA, and will be offering a light luncheon at 11:30 am, followed by the funeral service at 12:30 pm. From the church at 1:30 pm, Richard will be laid to rest at the Massachusetts Veterans Cemetery on Connery Avenue, Bourne MA.
His friends and relatives are invited to attend and say good bye to their trusted, irreplaceable Tony.
