[MAX SIEGEL Obituary]
SIEGEL, Max Age 103, died peacefully at his home in Brookline on February 24, 2016, cared for by family, friends, and a wonderful hospice program. Max was the beloved husband of the late Elaine (Damsky), father of his sons Benjamin (and wife Jane) and Richard (and wife Yuhong and late wife Laurie), grandfather of Elizabeth (and husband Greg Jacobs), Rebecca, Eric (and wife Angela) and Emily, great-grandfather of Audrey, Nina, Anika, Dorian, and Eliana, and brother of Louis. As a lawyer and political advocate, he was constantly involved with social justice issues. He helped organize the Boston-New Haven Pullman and Wait Staff union in the 40's, an affiliate of the national union lead by A. Philip Randolph. Later, he and his brother Ralph ran the Calumet Market in Roxbury, expanding it to a super market. He, with other business and community leaders, organized to oppose the inner belt roadway, which was to cut through the Roxbury community. He loved music, Shakespeare and poetry, and recited poetry by heart until he died. He had a beautiful voice, sang in many choral groups, and continued singing and performing until his death. He was a member of the Greater Boston Health Planning Council. He and his wife set up voluntary blood pressure screening at elderly housing in Brookline and Cambridge for many years. Max has donated his body to Boston University School of Medicine. A memorial service will be planned at HSL Brookline in the near future. Donations, in his memory, may be made to The Kids Fund, Boston Medical Center, c/o The development office 801 Mass. Ave. Boston 02118, or to Haley House, 23 Dartmouth Street, Boston, MA 02116
