It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my beloved mother,
Marlene Jane (Morris) Gagne, who passed away on October 1, 2024 at the age of 93.
She was born on February 5, 1931, in Boston, where she remained most of her life. For 35 years
she lived in South Boston on Third St. and in her final years in Quincy at Fenno House.
She was a dedicated and loving mother and grandmother to her daughter Linda and grandson
Ryan.
Marlene lived a fulfilling life and was a woman of many talents. She graduated from UMass
Boston earning a BA in English, at the age of 44. She was a talented artist who painted stunning
murals on every wall of her parlor in one of her homes. She also had a green thumb and created
a beautiful backyard garden at her house in South Boston, and a thriving vegetable garden at
her home in Maine., She was an avid reader and really enjoyed going to the neighborhood
library for books, films, and socializing. And she played piano.
Marlene was a kind, generous and friendly soul. She would sit outside on the “stoop” (as she
was a. real city girl), say hello to passersby and her neighbors and friends always enjoyed
stopping for chat. She will be remembered for her lovely smile and warm personality.
She is survived by her daughter Linda McDonough of South Boston, her grandson Ryan Whalen
& his wife Erin Monju and her great grandson Alexander. Marlene was the eldest of 6 sisters:
Winnie, Joan, Nancy, Carol & Gretchen.
A Celebration of Life gathering will be held for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family
suggests donations to the Disabled American Veterans or PBS Channel 2 Boston.
Rest in peace, dear mother. You will forever be in our hearts.
